    1) H.L. Mencken's tone in "The Libido for the Ugly" is disgust. He hates the way Westmoreland looks. He feels the town looks ugly. He also sounds disappointed. He felt that the builders could have built more to fill in the empty spaces and built nicer architecture.
    2) In the context of the essay, a libido for the ugly is referring to how the author feels only in the United States can you find such ugly areas but in other countries, no matter how poor the country is, you will not find one ugly town. Then he goes on to ask himself if it's ugly because whoever built them had no love of beauty in them.
    3) Mencken's thesis statement is in paragraph 8, "The love of ugliness for it's own sake, the lust to make the world intolerable"
    4) This article is about Mencken's view on the structures and land of Westmoreland County, the land along the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the whole United States compared to other countries. To him, this land has ugly structures, they didn't use the land and all it's space adequately and he even does not like the color of the structures and land. He feels it's because the American race has no love for beauty.
    5) I award this championship only after laborious research and incessant prayer means the author has searched for all the most ugliest towns in the world and he feels they are all found in the United States. He awards that title of the most ugliest towns to the U.S..

1.Mencken his tone in this essay is disappointed he wasn't liking how Pennsylvania was turning into a place where everything seemed to be coming down he wasn't pleased to how the buildings were built he felt it didn't really feel as if it was Westoreland county.

2.A libido for the ugly in this essay it means that he is not much satisfied of the towns ugliness he felt it could have been built better in the sense of making it look beautiful but he believes the people who built or created Westmoreland didn't have no creativity to make it look stupendous.

3."Are they so frightful because the valley is full of foreigners--dull, insensate brutes, with no love of beauty in them?" I believe his thesis statement is in the beginning of paragraph 6 because it is stating and also asking at the same time weather is there a reason to why they didn't built the city better then it is and it asks if they didn't have no love or lets say passion to come up with better buildings.

4.Mencken is stating that he sees his the town of Westmoreland is suppose to be better then other places but instead he sees that there are poor places and the towns they live are not ugly at all they may be poor but still have the creativity to make their town look beautiful and unlike where he lives with the money that they have they could have made Westmoreland look like a place never seen before he is ashamed that there's other places that are more beautiful then his.

5.The quote means that if you show you do great work and do anything possible and work like a champion and pray and have faith in yourself you will be rewarded at the end because is also like another quote that says "hard work pays off"
